چکیده

Arq Neuropsiquiatr 2012;70(8):637-644 640 We also highlight the fact that this unusual presentation of dystonia is almost indistinguishable from essential BSM, except by the non-involvement of the orbicularis oculi muscles. To best of our knowledge, this is the first report of sole frontalis, corrugator and procerus dystonia. Recently, Hirota et al.5 reported two cases of dystonic frowning. The first patient presented involuntary frowning and grimacing as the sole symptom, with no eyelid involvement. The second had typical symptoms of BSM only in the early phase of the disease, later the pattern of contractions changed and involuntary frowning and grimacing predominated. As most focal dystonias, these cases also presented excellent response to the use of botulinum toxin type A.

Clinical microdialysis in neuro-oncology: principles and applications

Clinical microdialysis allows a discrete volume of the brain to be sampled for neurochemical analysis of neurotransmitters, metabolites, biomarkers, and drugs. The technique can be safely used in humans intraoperatively, in the intensive care unit, and in ambulatory settings. Microdialysis probes, micropumps, and analytical equipment are commercially available and have been used extensively for...

[Cerebral microdialysis in the current clinical setting].

Cerebral microdialysis, introduced in experimental studies 40 years ago, has been used clinically since 1992 for the neurochemical monitoring of patients in intensive care. The principles underlying this technique are closely related to brain metabolism. The study of the metabolites detected at brain interstitial tissue level, through the semipermeable membrane of the device, allows us to asses...

The Use of Microdialysis in the Study of Encephalopathies

Microdialysis is a technique that was devised by Bito et al. (1966) in a study to determine free aminoacids and electrolytes in cerebrospinal fluid and blood plasma in dogs. It consists of recollection of samples in specific places by using semi-permeable membranes, used to evaluate compounds (endogenous neurotransmitters or exogenous such as drugs), in extracellular spaces from different tissu...

Assessment of the lower limit for cerebral perfusion pressure in severe head injuries by bedside monitoring of regional energy metabolism.

BACKGROUND In patients with severe traumatic brain lesions, the lower limit for cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) is controversial. The aim of this prospective study was to assess this limit from bedside measurements of cerebral energy metabolism and to clarify whether the penumbra zone surrounding a focal lesion is more sensitive to a decrease in CPP than less-injured areas. METHODS Fifty pa...

Microdialytical monitoring of uric and ascorbic acids in the brains of patients after severe brain injury and during neurovascular surgery.

OBJECTIVES Microdialysis has been extensively used to monitor brain metabolism in the extracellular fluid of patients with severe head injury, to detect the onset of secondary ischaemic damage. The aim was to investigate whether concentrations of uric and ascorbic acids were altered in such patients. Both these compounds play a part in free radical metabolism, which is accelerated after ischaem...
